OUR STORY
Mullen Natural Health Centre has been serving the community of Newcastle in some form since 1958. While Peter Mullen has owned and lead the current business for nearly three decades, its history stretches back 60 years.
Peter Mullen grew up in a very health-focused family, it was only natural that he would go on to pursue a career in health. After achieving his degree in Naturopathy at the NSW College of Natural Therapies, Peter was lucky enough to return to his hometown of Newcastle to work for McKay BioChemist in 1989 – a time when very few people were hiring Naturopaths.
The practice was established by Clary McKay in 1958, and was one of the only natural health clinics in the region. The McKays had a fantastic reputation and people would queue down the stairs to see the McKays at HP Chambers in Hamilton.
With the help and encouragement of his then-girlfriend (now wife) Dayna, Peter managed to scrape together enough money to buy the business in 1992. Despite it being a struggle at the time to make ends meet, they have never looked back.
1993 was a huge year for the business – Peter started his monthly visits to Singleton on Saturdays with our Care Assistant Mary, who still accompanies him all these years later.
It was also the year Dayna purchased the block of land behind HP Chambers with the vision of building the Murray Street practice. Two years, many thousands of dollars of debt, and one child later, they had built the beautiful new practice that the business still occupies today.
At the time, Peter was the only practitioner. Today, Mullen Natural Health Centre is home to a team of Naturopaths with a wide range of specialties treating patients every week.
Mullen Natural Health Centre is built on the principles of honesty, integrity, and respect, and Peter believes he owes much of his success to upholding these principles.
With more than 30 years of practice, Peter has been fortunate enough to help thousands of people get to the bottom of their health conditions and get back on the path to wellness. The thing he loves the most about working in the same practice all this time is the privilege of treating four generations of the same family – Peter still sees some clients he treated in his very first month of practice with the McKays.
Throughout his career, Peter has witnessed Australia’s obesity crisis, the exponential use of antibiotics and increasing issues with the health of our kids. While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of our health, Peter is encouraged by the increasing number of people who are thinking about their health in a holistic way, and using their own intuition to listen to their bodies to find a natural path to wellness.
Peter is grateful to call Newcastle home and for the endless support he has received over the last three decades.
