If you are in your 40s and something feels different, you are not alone.
Perimenopause can affect your sleep, mood, energy, weight, periods and more. And the symptoms are often connected, even when they seem unrelated.
At Mullen Health in Hamilton, our naturopaths look at the whole picture of perimenopause and menopause. We consider your hormones, nutrient levels, sleep, blood sugar, stress and overall health, rather than treating each symptom in isolation.
Who We Help
- Women in their 40s (or late 30s) noticing changes to their cycle, sleep, mood or energy
- Women who have been told it is “just stress” and sense there may be more to it
- Women whose symptoms seem unrelated, such as palpitations, dry eyes, ringing ears, joint stiffness or new food sensitivities
- Women with heavy periods, and concerns about iron and energy
- Women already in menopause who want ongoing support
- Women preparing for a conversation with their GP about their options, including HRT
If you have mentioned a few seemingly random symptoms to a few different practitioners, and nobody has connected them, we would like to help.
How We Support Perimenopause and Menopause at Mullen Health
1We Listen
Your first consultation starts with your story: your symptoms, cycle, sleep, energy, digestion, mood and health history.
Perimenopause rarely affects just one system, so we look across all of them.
2We Look at the Whole Picture
We don’t treat a symptom in isolation. Your practitioner reviews your results in conjunction with your:
Symptoms + Health History + Pathology + Diet + Lifestyle
3We Rule Out Other Causes
Perimenopause is one possibility among several. We review factors that can mimic or add to it, including thyroid function, iron, B12, zinc, iodine and blood sugar regulation.
If you have heavy periods, we can help you assess how much blood you are losing, and whether it may be affecting your iron levels.
Where testing is needed, we can recommend appropriate pathology and work alongside your GP.
4We Build a Personalised Plan
Your plan is built around you. It may include nutrition, targeted nutritional and herbal medicine, blood sugar, sleep and stress support, and lifestyle strategies.
5We Review and Adjust
Your body changes through this stage of life, and your plan should change with it. We review your progress and adjust your plan as needed, and we help you prepare for conversations with your other healthcare practitioners.
Genetic Testing: Another Piece of the Puzzle
We also offer SmartDNA Genomic Wellness Testing.
Many of the changes women notice through perimenopause and menopause, such as weight gain, shifts in blood sugar and cholesterol, poor sleep, low mood and changing nutrient needs, are areas where your genes can influence how your body responds to diet, nutrients, exercise and stress.
Genetic testing can give us another layer of information about:
- Weight and metabolic health, including blood sugar and insulin regulation
- Cardiovascular and cholesterol health, which hormonal changes can affect
- Methylation, B12 and folate, and your individual vitamin and nutrient requirements
- Stress, mood and sleep
- Inflammation, detoxification and antioxidant protection
- Exercise, and how it may influence your weight, cholesterol and metabolic health
Gene testing does not diagnose a condition or prove that your genes are causing your symptoms. Your practitioner interprets your results alongside your symptoms, health history, pathology, diet and lifestyle, so your plan is built around you.
And because your DNA does not change, your results can stay useful through perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

Perimenopause Treatment in Newcastle: FAQs
Do I Need a Referral to See a Naturopath?
No referral is needed. You can book online or call us on (02) 4961 4075.
What Is the Difference Between Seeing My GP and a Naturopath?
Your GP is essential for diagnosis, testing and prescribing. A naturopath looks at the whole picture of nutrition, lifestyle and nutritional or herbal support. The two work best together.
Can I See a Naturopath If I Am Taking, or Considering, HRT?
Yes. Naturopathic care can sit alongside your GP’s care. We will always ask what you are currently taking, and we encourage you to keep your GP informed.
Is Naturopathy Covered by Private Health Insurance?
Some health funds cover some of our services. It’s best to check with your individual health fund about your scope of cover. We don’t have HICAPS, so you will pay at the time of your visit and can claim afterwards.
How Many Appointments Will I Need?
It depends on you. Most women start with an initial consultation, followed by reviews to check progress and adjust the plan.
How Do I Know If My Symptoms Are Perimenopause?
No single symptom confirms it. We look at your age, your cycle and the whole pattern of your symptoms, and we rule out other causes first.
